This
is the antenna for a Mini-M satellite telephone enabling the Moksha
crew to send and receive voice, fax and data transmissions via the
Inmarsat network of satellites. One of the main reasons for having
this system (as well as giving peace of mind to our families!) is
to provide a link with schools.

ALTHOUGH CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET
or sending large file sizes (e.g. video clips) via the Mini-M
is painfully slow (and expensive) at a sluggish 2400 baud
line speed, Stratos Communications of Newfoundland in Canada
have developed compression software that allows speeds of
up to 9600, drastically reducing both transmission time and
cost.
