THE OCEAN SENTRY: an excellent piece of collision avoidance equipment (left in photo) that not only sends off an alarm inside Moksha alerting the crew of a ship in the vicinity, but also returns incoming radar pulses at many times the original magnitude, making Moksha look like an aircraft carrier (relatively speaking) on a ship’s radar screen.

>> IT IS ABLE TO DO THIS because it is active i.e. it uses external power from the boat’s batteries.

For more information about the Ocean Sentry, check out www.painswessex.com or email ‘PainsWessex Safety Systems’ at jcpains@aol.com or call (1) 561 883 1201

* A note on anti-collision equipment: the only grey area with these kinds of devices is the assumption that the other ships have their radars actually switched on. Very often ships will switch off their radars once away from land to avoid false alarms from whales or other objects floating in the water. There is never any substitute therefore for a pair of eyeballs scanning the horizon during both daylight and nighttime hours. However, during a solo voyage faith has to be placed in an all-round white light that one hopes the other ship will see in time!
