Welcome Expedition 360 Mathematicians!

Here you will be solving some mathematical problems for Jason. So put on your thinking cap, and get out the math books as references!

Math Activity 3- Everything But the Kitchen Sink

Having read Jason's journal entries before leaving Darwin, imagine what it is like to pack EVERYTHING you need to live for two weeks in a space that is four feet wide by twenty six feet long. Some of that space is used for sleeping as well as the area for the pedal seat so you must pack very carefully to make sure all you need will fit.

Think of your typical daily activities and what you need during the day. What kind of clothes do you wear, what kind of food do you eat, how much water do you need for washing and for drinking? What kind of equipment do you use throughout the day, depending upon your activities? Make a list of the items you use during a normal day and be sure to include food, clothes, equipment, etc. Work with a partner to make your lists as most everything you include will have to be times two of you!

Now, imagine that you are packing your bags for a two week expedition on the ocean and no store or supply outpost in sight! Your job is to put together a list of all that you will need. Remember space is limited so pack wisely, only taking essential items. Consider your daily activities which will be pedaling, reading, sleeping, etc.

Lesson Activities:

Materials:

pencils

large sheet of paper to list supplies or this worksheet Download file

Procedure:

Brainstorm with a partner a list of equipment and supplies needed to complete a two week stay aboard a twenty-six foot boat.

Catagorize the supply list, i.e. clothes, food, equipment, medical supplies, cooking utensils, water containers, camping gear.

Estimate the space needed for each category on the supply list. Use feet, inches, centimeters or meters.

Estimate the area available on the boat for supplies. Remember to leave space for a sleeping area (what is your height plus one foot) and pedal seat and pedaling unit (approx. five feet in length).

Draw the boat dimensions and create a diagram, identifying how you would organize all of your supplies in a limited space.

Extended Activities:

Create an actual space in your classroom of the pedal boat, 26 feet X 4 feet wide. Outline the area, then fill it with your expedition supplies. (Remember to pack for two weeks, then times two for you and a partner!)
