GRADE LEVEL - we recommend this
program for 4th through 7th grade in the US. Age range 10-13 years.
TIMELINE - the main event starts
the 15th April 2005, finishing the 14th October. We encourage students
to still track the expedition team's progress via the Expedition
Journal during vacation/holiday periods.
The learning center resources, including the weekly
lesson activities, will be available for the first semester April
15th through the end of May. At this point the winners of the competition
will be announced. See below for prize information.
A second semester event will begin August 15th
through October 14th, at which point competition winners for this
second period will be announced. See below for prize information.
HOW TO USE THIS PROGRAM - 1.
First REGISTER YOUR CLASS. This
will allow your students to participate in the interative portion
of the event and take advantage of the weekly activities in math,
science and social studies.
2. Then go to the EXPEDITION
JOURNAL: expedition team members will be sending back journal
entries to the x360 weblog every 1-2 days via laptop and satellite
phones. Taking the form of text and still images, these updates
will provide an ongoing adventure narrative for students to track
the latest progress of the expedition team kayaking through Indonesia.
3. Next, go to the LEARNING
CENTER: create student teams for math, science and social studies.
Each team will be responsible for researching the lesson and finding
a solution for the weekly activity.
After completing the weekly assessment, teams
may post comments, feedback and questions to the weblog
set up for that subject area. You will need your username and password
assigned when you first registered for the event.
Teams may rotate content areas throughout the
competition.
A weekly assessment of lesson objectives will
be completed by each class. Teachers will email class responses
to me - April - by the end
of each week. Please note that the more responses sent in by a class
over the event period, the better its chances of winning the competition.
Results of the winning teams will be posted on
the subject area weblogs at the beginning of the following week.
COMPETITION and PRIZES - the
winning class for both competitions will be awarded a kayak paddle
signed by expedition team members. The winning team for period 1
will be announced the end of May. The winning class for period 2
will be announced the middle of October.
TEACHER'S WEBLOG - ask questions,
post comments or interact with other teachers via the Teachers
Weblog.
