To send our daily reports back to the website we have two options. We either use our Trimble Galaxy inmarsat-c, which also has a built-in EPIRB alarm if something goes badly wrong. Or we use our Mini-M satellite telephone provided by Stratos Communications, which although does not have any EPIRB alarm features like the inmarsat-c, does have the advantage of handling voice, fax and data.

>> VHF RADIO

For communication at close quarters to line of sight (only about 3-4 miles in Moksha) with land or other vessels we use ICOM VHF fixed and handheld radios. Once you have a license and made the initial financial outlay it’s free to use thereafter. It’s a must for anyone in a boat: pedal or otherwise!

>> EMAIL

We use a ruggedized PC laptop to send and receive email from the boat. The Rocky II is waterproof, shockproof and resistance to invasion from salt air and fog. On several occasions one of us has been drenched by an incoming wave while writing the daily update - and the machine still kept on going!
